DATSIFACT is a prewriting activity that helps students remember what to include when they write stories.
DATSIFACT helps students because it offers them what process writing doesn't: what to include in good writing. The writing process still helps students in how to write, but it doesn't really help in what they write. DATSIFACT does.
DATSIFACT is an acronym that helps writers cover each of the elements of effective writing. What did the characters say, think, and feel? What's the setting? What imagery and figurative language make the writing come alive?
In DATSIFACT, each letter represents an element beneficial to storywriting:
Dialogue
Action
Thoughts and Feelings
Setting
Imagery
Figurative Language
Adjectives and Adverbs
Characterization
Topic
When students include these elements in their compositions, they produce more detailed and better compositions. They find their voice. They learn to understand that writing stories isn't only telling what happened, but involves many different elements.
Student samples have shown that DATSIFACT helps struggling writers produce well-written stories. And with each state testing a student's ability to write stories, our students could use as much help as they can get.
